“The Inspira Santa Marta Hotel in Lisbon, Portugal, lives its motto “Engaging your Senses,” involving guests, staff members, partners, and suppliers, encouraging everybody to join their sustainable mission. A top-performing Green Globe member since 2012, this property has invested in sustainable strategies, along with the latest technology infrastructure to ensure an environmentally-friendly operation and act responsibly.

At Inspira Santa Marta, CSR is a process that embraces responsibility for all business activities, promoting awareness throughout the community. The hotel supports numerous initiatives and charitable organizations.

General Manager, Nicolas Roucos, commented, “Inspira has always aimed to identify itself with many CSR projects considered to really make a difference or add value, following our motto `Doing the Right Thing.` Supporting the community inspires us.”

The Inspira Santa Marta Hotel is part of the first Business Interest Group constituted under the BIO&Sintra project “Reduction of carbon footprint, a contribution to enhance biodiversity in Sintra.” Listed by UNESCO in 1995, the cultural landscape of Sintra is a World Heritage Site. This area, made up of the palace and park of Pena, gardens and palace of Monserrate, the Moorish castle, the Capuchos Convent, and several other historic and nature sites, is a popular tourist destination.

The overall project objective is to develop a pilot experience (transferable to other locations) for the cultural landscape of Sintra, aimed at changing people`s attitudes, and targeting a decrease in carbon emissions to mitigate climate change, safeguarding local habitats and species.

“It is crucial to improve the understanding of key biodiversity issues, not only from an environmental and ethical point of view, but also from a financial perspective. The natural values of the cultural landscape of Sintra have an important contribution towards the sustainability of the regional economy,” added Nicolas Roucos.

In collaboration with 25 regional working groups, the Inspira Santa Marta is on a mission to raise the awareness level of environmental protection in the area. On a regular basis, staff members participate in volunteer activities, such as the construction of nests and feeders for the birds, or clean-ups at the botanical garden, located in the center of Lisbon.

By implementing numerous green practices, the Inspira Santa Marta has gained a competitive advantage, as a hotel, operating in a niche market. For more information please watch The Inspira Santa Marta video on Green Globe`s youtube channel: mygreenglobe.com .
